About the Role
Are you a safeguarding expert with a passion for student mental health and holistic development? The British School of Tenerife (BST) is seeking a strategic Well-being & Safeguarding Lead to join our leadership team.
In this pivotal role, you will act as a Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), overseeing all child protection systems and student welfare across our all-through school. You will also lead the PSHEE curriculum, teaching engaging lessons that build resilience, healthy relationships, and emotional intelligence in our multilingual international community.

Core Responsibilities
- Strategic Safeguarding: Lead and maintain school-wide safeguarding policies (DSL/DDSL), ensuring full compliance with local and BSO regulations.
- Well-being Leadership: Develop a graduated approach to mental health support, including early interventions and counseling pathways.
- PSHEE Curriculum: Teach and sequence high-quality PSHEE lessons (KS3-5), adapted for EAL learners and focused on oracy and character development.
- Staff Development: Provide safeguarding training and reflective supervision for all staff, promoting a trauma-informed school culture.
- Community Engagement: Lead bilingual parent workshops on online safety, transitions, and mental health.
Requirements
• Qualified teacher status (UK or equivalent) or relevant professional qualification with substantial experience in school safeguarding and pastoral leadership.
• Experience teaching PSHEE to secondary or mixed secondary/KS3–5 cohorts.
• Proven experience as a DSL (or Deputy DSL) with working knowledge of local child‑protection procedures and statutory expectations.
• Strong interpersonal skills; effective communicator with students, parents and external agencies; sensitivity to cultural and language diversity.
• Ability to manage confidential casework, make professional referrals and keep accurate records.
Person specification — desirable
• Degree or postgraduate qualification in Psychology, Educational Psychology, Counselling, Social Work or similar.
• Training in trauma‑informed practice, mental‑health first aid, or supervision qualification.
• Experience working in international schools and with high‑EAL cohorts; bilingual (English/Spanish) proficiency desirable.
